Is Buying Local Water Better for the Environment

Discover why buying local water in Clarkston reduces plastic waste, lower carbon emissions, and support your community. Cleaner water starts close to home.

There's a growing awareness around the environmental impact of single-use plastic water bottles-and even more conversation about what microplastics may be doing to our bodies. It raises a fair question: is buying water locally more eco-friendly than purchasing from a nationwide supplier?

Douglas Water Depot is Clarkston's local, sustainable water option. With four choices - mineral, purified artesian, and alkaline - you get great water while also reducing unnecessary plastic waste.

The Environmental Cost of Shipping Bottled Water Nationwide

Shipping water across the country creates a surprisingly large carbon footprint. Water is heavy and transporting it long distances requires significant fuel. More miles means more emissions.

There's also the added packaging. Nationwide shipping typically requires extra boxes, shrink wrap, and protective plastics to prevent damage in transit. All of that eventually adds up.

Long travel times and warehouse storage can also increase hear exposure. Excessive heat is one of the biggest contributors to plastic degradation and potential leaching. The longer water sits in transit, the more exposure it may have.

Why Buying Local is More Eco-Friendly

Buying local immediately reduces transportation emissions. Shorter distances mean a smaller carbon footprint compared to water shipped across the country.

At Douglas Water Depot, our in-store refill station allows you to reuse the bottles you already have. We even offer a sanitizing station so your containers are cleaned and ready to refill. Reusing bottles dramatically cuts down on plastic water.

Shorter travel time also means less exposure to heat and sunlight, helping maintain water quality from fill to finish.

Smart Water Softeners: How Wi-Fi Technology Protects Your Home

Wi-Fi enabled water softeners offer real-time alerts, leak detection, and better efficiency. Discover how smart water protects Michigan homes.

Technology has changed nearly every part of our homes. From smart thermostats and security systems to appliances that connect right to our phones, convenience is now expected. That same smart technology has finally made its way into water treatment.

With Wi-Fi enabled water softeners, homeowners can combine performance, protection, and peace of mind all from their phones. Douglas Water Depot proudly offers EcoWater's smart water softeners, built to handle Michigan's hard water while keeping you connected with real-time alerts and system updates.

What Is a Wi-Fi Enabled Water Softener?

A Wi-Fi enabled water softener is considered "smart" because it connects to your home's internet and allows remote monitoring through the EcoWater Hydrolink app. From your phone or tablet, you can track water usage, monitor salt levels, and view overall system performance in real time.

Unlike traditional softeners, smart systems provide the same proven soft water performance, but with added automation and alerts. Instead of guessing when something might be wrong, your system keeps you informed before problems start.

Key Features of Smart Water Softeners

One of the biggest advantages of a smart softener is real-time water usage tracking. Daily and monthly monitoring helps identify unusual spikes that could indicate leaks or excessive water use.

Low-salt alerts notify you before the brine tank runs empty, preventing hard water from entering your home. The system can also detect continuous water flow and valve-related issues, helping catch problems early. All of this information is accessible anytime, anywhere, directly from your smart phone.

How Smart Softeners Protect Your Home

Wi-Fi enabled softeners provide peace of mind, especially when you're away from home. Real-time alerts can notify you of unusual water usage that may signal a leak, allowing you to act quickly.

Consistent soft water also protects water using appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters from hard water scale. Reducing scale build up improves efficiency, extends appliance life, and can help lower energy costs. On top of that, softened water means softer skin, shinier hair, and cleaner dishes without a cloudy residue.

Why Smart Technology Matters for Michigan Homes

Hard water is common throughout Michigan, making water softener essential for many households. Add in hard winters that can stress plumbing systems and smart technology becomes even more valuable.

Wi-Fi enabled softeners offer early warnings if something goes wrong, even when you're not home. Busy families also appreciate the convenience of knowing salt levels ahead of time. No more discovering an empty bring tank at the worst possible moment. Douglas Water Depot customizes each system to match your local water conditions for the best results.

           Maintenance & Support Made Easy

Smart monitoring puts your water treatment system's information right at your fingertips. You'll always know how your system is performing and when maintenance is needed.

Water & Wellness: How Proper Hydration Impacts Your Energy Levels

Proper hydration supports energy, digestion, skin health, and focus year-round. Learn how seasonal habits and great-tasting water make hydration easier.

Most people know hydration is important, but many don’t realize just how much it affects daily energy, focus, digestion, and overall well-being. In Michigan, our constantly changing seasons can make it even harder to stay consistently hydrated. Cold winters, busy summers, and everything in between all impact how much water we drink and how our bodies respond.

That’s where Douglas Water Depot comes into play. We make staying hydrated easier with clean, great-tasting water you’ll actually enjoy drinking. From our in-store water bar and flexible gallon sizes to our 24-hours outdoor refill station, we’re here to support your hydration goals year round.

Why Hydration Matters More Than You Think

Water plays a major role in nearly every system in your body. It supports digestion by helping break down food, absorb nutrients, and keep things moving in your digestive tract. Water is also a key part of saliva, which starts breaking down carbohydrates before food even reaches your stomach. Staying hydrated helps keep the gut lining healthy and support a balanced microbiome.

Hydration is also essential for temperature regulation. Your body relies on water to sweat and release heating. Our sweating prevents overheating and heat related illness. When you are dehydrated, sweating becomes less effective, making it harder for your body to cool itself.

How Hard Water Affects Your Skin, Hair, and Laundry

Hard water can dry your skin, dull your hair, and damage laundry. Learn how mineral buildup affects your home and how water softening helps protect it.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking,

I wish my hair felt softer

         or

why don't my whites look as bright as they used to?

Maybe your skin never quite feels clean, or your appliances and laundry seem to develop stubborn crust over time. If any of that sound familiar, hard water may be the reason.

Hard water is water that contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. While it's safe to drink, hard water can have a noticeable impact on your skin, hair, laundry, and water using appliances. Over time, those minerals can leave skin feeling dry, itchy, and cause buildup throughout your home.

Douglas Water has been a trusted source for water treatment since 1068 and we are so proud to collaborate with them on this important aspect. From sump pumps and water heaters to softeners and plumbing repairs, we don't just replace systems - we help maintain and repair them affordably. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at how hard water affects your daily routine and what you can do to reduce those everyday frustrations.

How Hard Water Affects Your Skin

There are several common skin issues that may be linked to hard water. If your skin often feels dry, tight or itchy, hard water could be the culprit. People with eczema or psoriasis may notice more frequent flare-ups, and some experience a rough or filmy feeling on their skin immediately after showering.

So why does this happen? Hard water minerals react with soaps and body washes, creating soap scum. That residue can clog pores and prevent your skin from absorbing its natural moisture, leaving it feeling irritated and dry.

For long-term relief, installing a water softener is the most effective solution. If you already have a softener and are still experiencing issues, a water treatment assessment can help determine if it's working properly. Short-term fixes include using gently, pH-balanced products and taking extra care to rinse thoroughly.

How Hard Water Affects Your Hair

No matter your hair length, texture, or color, hard water can take a toll. Common signs include dry, brittle strands, faded color or even orange tone in lighter/color treated hair. Some people also experience dandruff or scalp irritation.

This happens because minerals in hard water build up on the scalp and clings to the hair shaft itself. Over time, that buildup weighs hair down, making it harder to manage and stripping away shine.

Short-term solutions include suing a clarifying shampoo weekly and installing a showerhead with a build in filter. For lasting results, having your water softener checked or installing one if you don't already have one can make a noticeable difference in hair health.

How Hard Water Affects Your Laundry

There are a few clear signs that hard water is impacting your laundry. Soap scum on the inside of your washing machine and the need to use more detergent than usual are common red flags.

Hard water minerals reduce detergent effectiveness, leaving clothes looking dull, stiff or faded. Just like with skin and hair, minerals interfere with the detergent's ability to clean properly.

Short-term fixes can include detergent boosters or adding a small amount of vinegar to your wash. However, when appliances aren't running efficiently, the real cost adds up over time. Mineral buildup can shorten the lifespan of washing machines and other water-using appliances, leading to repairs or premature replacements.

           Low Water Pressure

One of the most common issues we see is low water pressure. While this can stem from various problems, there are simple steps you can take to identify and address the issue:

            Change the filters

Star by replacing your pre or post filters on the whole home filter. Filters should typically be changed every 3 - 6 months, depending on water usage and quality.

For every 2 pre - filter changes, ensure you replace the post filter once.

Check the resin in the softener

If changing the filter doesn't resolve the issue, the resin inside the softener might be causing low pressure. To test this, bypass the softener and check if the water pressure improves. As a note, each softener has a brand specific bypass system. If you're unsure how to bypass your unit contact us for your personalized assistance.

Salt issues are another common problem. These can manifest as:

Break up the bridge or cake manually with a broomstick, taking care to not damage internal components.

Let your brine tank get as empty as possible before refilling. Aim to refill when the salt is 6 inches from the bottom of the bring.

Use high purity evaporated salt instead of solar sal.t

To prevent salt bridging, try filling the brine tank only halfway.

We hear it all the time: "Just buy it on Amazon" or "it's cheaper online". While Amazon is great for certain things - like quirky t-shirts or your favorite snacks -

water treatment is not one of them.

Water quality impacts your health, your plumbing, your appliances, and your home's long-term value. While Amazon might offer fast shipping and seemingly good prices. It often comes at the cost of

product quality, proper installation, and long-term support.

When it comes to something as important as your water, cutting corners can lead to serious consequences.

Many water treatment products sold on Amazon come from

           third-party seller

            - small vendors with no formal affiliation with Amazon. These sellers manage their own inventory, customer service, and fulfillment, which opens the door to a number of risks:

            Counterfeit and repackaged items:

filters, membranes, and parts may look like name-brand products, but are often made with inferior materials. These substandard items can damage your system, reduce filtration effectiveness, and void your warranties.

            No NSF/ANSI Certifications:

Amazon doesn't always verify whether a product meets the industry standards that ensure water safety and performance.

Example: A few years ago, counterfeit EcoWater Reverse Osmosis membranes were being sold on a 3rd party website. Some customers unknowingly installed them, which lead to cracked manifolds and denied warranty claims - because the damage was caused by an unapproved part.

Amazon has programs like Brand Registry and its A - Z Guarantee, but they aren't perfect, and many customers only discover the issues after costly damage has already occurred.

            Misinformation & Misleading Reviews

Amazon reviews can be helpful - but they can also be

           inaccurate, manipulated, or misleading.

Some reviews can be paid for, auto-generated, or posted by users with no actual experience with the product.

Product descriptions also tend to be

           overpromised,

using phrases like 'removes all contaminants.' In water treatment world, we don't deal in absolutes - we deal in

           reduction.

We can reduce iron, arsenic, and other harmful contaminants significantly, but very few filters can remove 'everything'.

            Even more concerning

Amazon sellers can't give you technical advice.

There's no expert consultation to help you decide what system your home actually needs. That's a big risk for something as specific as water chemistry.

            Compatibility & Installation Risk

No two homes have the exact same water chemistry - not even on the same street. That's why

water treatment systems often don't work. What works in one home may be ineffective or even damaging in another. When you buy a water softener or reverse osmosis system online and install it yourself:

             You risk

             Improperly installed systems can

resulting in longer repair times and higher costs.

            No Water Testing or Customization

Before selecting a water treatment system, your water should be tested. Why? Because the solution depends on the problem. Is your concern iron? Arsenic? Hardness? Chlorine? PFAS OR PFOAS?

Amazon can't test your water and it certainly can't interpret your results.

No Long-Term Support or Warranty Backing

Sellers rarely offer reliable support, maintenance plans, or extended warranties. When your system stops working or needs repair, there's no local technician, no replacement parts, and no one to call. That's not just frustrating - it's expensive. By contrast at

Water treatment is essential for maintaining the lifespan of your home appliances and ensuring water quality. Softened water helps extend the life of dishwashers, coffee makers, washing machines, and water heaters. However, understanding the different types of water treatment

systems can be overwhelming. In this blog, we'll break down the differences between a water softener, a reverse osmosis (RO system), and a whole home reverse osmosis system to help you determine the best solution for you home.

A water softener is your first line of defense against hard water minerals. It reduces calcium and magnesium in the water, but does not remove contaminants like chlorine, bacteria, and heavy metals.

           How it works?

The salt in the brine tank does not soften your water - the magic happens inside the softener itself. Inside, the resin beads perform an ion exchange process. Hard water minerals (calcium and magnesium) attach to the resin beads that perform the ion exchange process. Overtime, the resin becomes saturated with minerals and needs to be cleaned. This is where the salt brine comes into play - it rinses the minerals from the resin beads, allowing the softener to continue removing hardness from the water.

A Whole House RO system is a large scale reverse osmosis unit designed to purify all the water in your home, ensuring that every faucet, appliance, and fixture receives purified water.

A whole house RO system operates similarly to a point of use RO system, but on a much larger scale. However, it requires additional pre-treatment and more extensive maintenance. To function correctly, it is highly recommended to install both a water softener and an iron filter (well water) or carbon filter (city water supply) to prevent excessive wear on the RO membrane.

measures the acidity of alkalinity of a substance:

Contrary to popular belief, salt isn't what directly softens your water. The magic happens through a process called

where resin beads inside your softener remove hard water causing minerals like calcium and magnesium. Over time, these minerals accumulate on the resin beads, requiring 'cleaning' to maintain efficiency and performance.

This is where salt plays a vital role. When dissolved in water, salt creates a brine that 'cleans' the resin beads by flushing away the accumulated minerals, allowing them to continue softening your water. Choosing the right salt not only improves the performance, but also extends the life of your water softener.

           How it's made:

Solar salt is produced by evaporating seawater or brine, typically collected through solution mining, and then harvested from outdoor pools.

           Pros:

Purity of about 99.5% making it suitable for water softeners

           Cons:

The outdoor harvesting process may introduce insoluble materials like rocks, which can accumulate in the brine tank, causing performance issues and requiring more frequent cleaning.

Like solar salt, evaporated salt starts with solution mining. However, the evaporation process occurs in a controlled, indoor environment where heat and steam remove excess water. This results in a high purity level of about 99.9%.

            Monitor Salt Levels:

only refill your water softener when the salt level in the brine tank is

six inches or less from the bottom.

Overfilling can lead to salt bridging and inefficiencies.

            Regular Checks:

Check your brine tank periodically to ensure it has enough salt to maintain soft water. The frequency of checks depends on factors such as water hardness, household size, and water usage.

            Avoid Salt Bridges:

Excessive bridging (a hard crust that forms above the water level) interfere with the softener's regeneration process. If you notice a salt bridge, pour hot water into the brine tank to dissolve it and scoop out any remaining salt or debris.

The best way to eliminate Calcium and Magnesium from your water and prevent costly damage is by installing a water softener. Water softeners use a process called ion exchange, which captures hard water minerals on resin beads inside the softener. These minerals are then rinsed away using a brine solution – this is why it’s important to keep salt in your water softener for it to function properly.

While research is ongoing, some studies have explored potential health benefits:

           Acid Reflux Relief

A 20-year-old test tube study found that alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 could neutralize stomach acid and relieve acid reflux symptoms. One study compared alkaline water and a Mediterranean diet to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) (common acid reflux medication). The results showed that alkaline water and a plant based diet were as effective as PPIs in managing acid reflux, suggesting that dietary changes might be a better long-term solution than medication alone.

An acidic environment inhibits bone formation while breaking down existing bone. Since bones contain alkaline reserves to balance excess acidity, some researchers have suggested that alkaline water could help protect bone density, especially in postmenopausal women. In one study, postmenopausal participants with osteoporosis were divided into two groups:

           A study of

           100 healthy adults

            found that alkaline water was

           twice as hydrating

           after exercise.

           This suggests that alkaline water

While these studies are intriguing, more research is needed to confirm the long-term benefits of drinking alkaline water. Current evidence does not strongly support the idea that alkaline water provides major advantages over regular, high quality drinking water
